Halifax, West Yorkshire, is a town that truly captures the essence of English heritage. Its cobbled streets and beautiful architecture tell a story of a bygone era, where life was simple and the town's industrious spirit was at its height.

The town's rich history dates to the 12th century, and this is evident in its stunning architecture, from the medieval Halifax Minster to the elegant Georgian style of the Piece Hall. The town's cobbled streets and historic buildings make it a popular destination for tourists seeking to experience the essence of English heritage.

Halifax's roots in the industry can be traced back to the wool trade of the 15th century, which became one of England's most important textile manufacturing centres during the Industrial Revolution.

This is evident in our beautiful building too! The Bowers Mill was built in the 17th century as a water-powered Fulling Mill, Corn Mill and finally became a Woollen Mill!

Historical Landscapes

Visitors can explore the town's industrial heritage through its many iconic landmarks, such as Shibden Park. This picturesque park is a true gem, offering a delightful blend of natural beauty and historical significance. As you enter the park, you'll be greeted by expansive green spaces, vibrant floral displays, and serene lakes. History buffs will be fascinated to learn about its ties to Anne Lister, an influential 19th-century diarist and landowner. You can also walk through her ancestral home and capture a glimpse into her life.

Halifax is certainly not short of historical museums and galleries, such as the Bankfield Museum and the Calderdale Industrial Museum, which showcase its fascinating history. The Bankfield Museum takes visitors on a journey through the town's textile industry, while the Calderdale Industrial Museum gives insight into the town's engineering feats. Both museums offer a glimpse into the town's heritage and people's way of life.

Perhaps the most iconic landmark in Halifax is the Piece Hall which is located only 15 minutes away from Bowers Mill Aparthotel. Built in 1779, this magnificent Georgian building was once a thriving cloth hall where merchants traded wares. Today, it has been beautifully restored and converted into a shopping and cultural hub with a wide range of independent shops, cafes, and restaurants. The Piece Hall also regularly hosts live events, music concerts, and craft fairs, making it a must-visit attraction in Halifax.

If you’re into your TV shows and films, you’re in luck! Many film crews decided to use the beautiful backdrop of the Halifax scenery. The iconic British sitcom ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ was heavily filmed in Holmfirth, just 30 minutes from Bowers Mill Aparthotel. Another fantastic find is the Worth Valley Railway, where the 1970’s film The Railway Children brought its popularity. You can relive the moments that captured your imagination and rekindle the spirit of adventure that made "The Railway Children" so enchanting. With its rich history and beautiful surroundings, Worth Valley is a pilgrimage every movie lover should embark upon.

The Peak District

A huge plus of Halifax is its proximity to the Peak District. Halifax's location at the edge of the Peak District is truly a nature lover's dream! The stunning national park spans over 555 square miles of England's central uplands and is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, rugged landscapes, and rolling hills. The dramatic peaks and lush valleys offer abundant outdoor activities, including hiking, cycling, rock climbing, and birdwatching.

The Peak District is also home to several picturesque villages with unique charm and history. Visitors can explore quaint towns like Bakewell, famous for its delicious Bakewell pudding, or Castleton, known for its stunning cave systems and historic castle.

The Peak District truly stands out for its diverse terrain, which offers something for everyone, regardless of age or experience.
